Yesterday, I made $.89 from Medium. Take that, people who say you can never make money from Medium. It’s almost enough to hit up the vending machine at my office.
How I Did It
I talked about the importance of building something for yourself first, which is a very relevant topic. I submitted my work to a publication called New Writer’s Welcome instead of posting on my own steam.
I used particular examples from experts (Mike Duncan in this case). I did good formatting and included a few pictures. The reviewers actually told me that I had added too many images, but I’d rather that than too few.
The Work Behind The Scenes
I’ve been a member of New Writers Welcome for some time and regularly contribute to their publication. I’ve got a rough idea of their posting requirements, which aren’t super detailed.
I have been a fan of Mike’s podcasts for a while now, and appreciate the scholarly approach he takes to his work. I’m still a little upset that I can’t find Gentleman Johnny’s Party Train merch for cheap. IYKYK
It took a few hours, mostly because I kept being interrupted by my 9 - 5 and I kept hitting the wall of “writer’s block”, which I only sort of believe in.
What I’m Reading
On Looking by Alexandra Horowitz. It’s been an interesting read so far where a journalist takes different experts on the same block and gets their perspective on everything they see.
What I’m Writing
I look forward to writing about creating a community, ADHD struggles, and goats in the library.
What I Wrote Last Week
Being creative for yourself and the monthly recap for February
Other Projects
I have 2 projects! I’m still working with Faith on View, and the question this week is “What Is Love?” The challengew will be refraining from saying “Baby Don’t Hurt Me”. It’ll be a challenge. The other project was inspired by my conversation with Kris Hughes, where he recommended that I go hyper-local and write for the businesses in my area. That’s going to be starting from scratch and building relationships.
The Almighty Portfolio:
I still need to contact Contra with my Loom video telling them how awesome I am. Can you tell I’ve been procrastinating on it?
